    Self-learning Multiscale Simulation for Achieving High Accuracy and High Efficiency Simultaneously

    We propose a new multi-scale molecular dynamics simulation method which can achieve high accuracy and high sampling efficiency simultaneously without aforehand knowledge of the coarse grained (CG) potential and test it for a biomolecular system. Based on the resolution exchange simulations between atomistic and CG replicas, a self-learning strategy is introduced to progressively improve the CG potential by an iterative way. Two tests show that, the new method can rapidly improve the CG potential and achieve efficient sampling even starting from an unrealistic CG potential. The resulting free energy agreed well with exact result and the convergence by the method was much faster than that by the replica exchange method. The method is generic and can be applied to many biological as well as non-biological problems.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Massive 4d4d particle with torsion and conformal mechanics

    The consequences of coupling of the torsion (highest curvature) term to the Lagrangian of a massive spinless particle in four-dimensional space-time are studied. It is shown that the modified system remains spinless and possesses extended gauge invariance. Though the torsion term does not generate spin, it provides the system with a nontrivial mass spectrum, described by one-dimensional conformal mechanics. Under an appropriate choise of characteristic constants the system has solutions with a discrete mass spectrum.Comment: 9 pages, revised version accepted in Phys.Lett.

    Observations of HONO by laser-induced fluorescence at the South Pole during ANTCI 2003

    Observations of nitrous acid (HONO) by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) at the South Pole taken during the Antarctic Troposphere Chemistry Investigation (ANTCI), which took place over the time period of Nov. 15, 2003 to Jan. 4, 2004, are presented here. The median observed mixing ratio of HONO 10 m above the snow was 5.8 pptv (mean value 6.3 pptv) with a maximum of 18.2 pptv on Nov 30th, Dec 1st, 3rd, 15th, 17th, 21st, 22nd, 25th, 27th and 28th. The measurement uncertainty is ±35%. The LIF HONO observations are compared to concurrent HONO observations performed by mist chamber/ion chromatography (MC/IC). The HONO levels reported by MC/IC are about 7.2 ± 2.3 times higher than those reported by LIF. Citation: Liao, W., A. T. Case, J. Mastromarino, D. Tan, and J. E.     Coalescence in low-viscosity liquids

    The expected universal dynamics associated with the initial stage of droplet coalescence are difficult to study visually due to the rapid motion of the liquid and the awkward viewing geometry. Here we employ an electrical method to study the coalescence of two inviscid droplets at early times. We measure the growth dynamics of the bridge connecting the two droplets and observe a new asymptotic regime inconsistent with previous theoretical predictions. The measurements are consistent with a model in which the two liquids coalesce with a slightly deformed interface.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figure

    Antecedents and Outcomes of End User Computing Competence

    The tremendous proliferation of end user computing (EUC) in the workplace over the past few decades is cause for concern in public and private organizations. Computer use has moved from individuals working with dumb terminals in centralized networks to individuals operating personal computers, just as powerful as yesterday\u27s mainframe. The end user has had to evolve and will continue evolving as well; from someone with low level technical skills to someone with a high level of technical knowledge and information managerial skills. Because EUC continues growing more sophisticated, end users must not only maintain a level of competence, but prepare for the next generation of computing technology. Doing so will enable organizations to continue enjoying the positive benefits of EUC success. Research indicates that EUC success may depend on end user competence. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test an integrated model of EUC success, the results of this study show that computer training, education level, beliefs about computer systems and the ability to operate them lead to end user computing competence. Additionally, results show that computer system use, a factor in achieving EUC success, is an outcome of end user computing competence. The overall conclusions drawn from this study is that the Air Force organization may be able to improve its efforts to successfully use computing technology, however it appears individual personnel have the competence to do so already. There may be additional underlying factors contributing to the lack of significant computing success, the discovery of which is a prospect for future research

    Voice and data cabling enable people around the world to communicate by phone, fax, and computer. Cabling is the basis for virtually every network. Today\u27s voice and data cabling is engineered to balance high performance with cost efficiency. The quality of the service provided by the cabling is directly related to the quality of the installation. Properly installed cabling can provide years of service for networks, in most cases outlasting every device connected to the network. Experience has taught us that too many people don\u27t realize the importance of cable infrastructure. At Alfred State College, in the Computer Engineering Technology curriculum there is not a course specifically targeted at the cable infrastructure. This project was to develop a new course aimed at the cable infrastructure to be implemented into the curriculum. This paper is about the entire course development process from project inception to course implementation. Although this project was to design a network infrastructure course, the process used could be applied to develop a new course for any curriculum

    Social Ethics in the Novels of Harriet Beecher Stowe

    Harriet Beecher Stowe has engendered a good deal of critical contradiction, both in her own time and since. Most of more extreme controversy centers on her popular and influential anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom\u27s Cabin. Although the New England novels are generally considered to have some merit as examples of local color fiction, Stowe earned her place in the canon of American literature primarily on the basis her authorship of UTC. But the place is an uneasy one. UTC\u27s popularity and impact make it too big an event in American literary history for it, or its author, to be disregarded, but disputes about its intellectual, moral, and artistic legitimacy are rife. It has been variously described by critics as disastrous and miraculous, awkward and artful, dishonest and sincere, keenly intelligent and irrationally emotionalistic, racist and anti-racist, feminist and all-too-oppressively feminine. But whatever else may be said about UTe, few would dispute that Stowe wrote it openly, self-consciously, and unapologetical in a woman\u27s voice, which, for a novel addressing social and political issues of national importance, was at the time something unusual (and controversial) in itself. It is perhaps seems less unusual today, but I would suggest that in some respects the controvery has remained constistent, and that much of the critical argument about UTe may be attributed to the problems of interpreting a woman\u27s voice fairly in a man\u27s world
